Rubens did a superb job and he outpaced me all weekend."

A wet race saw Michael's intermediate tires superior to everyone. With them, Michael was several seconds a lap quicker than Montoya and overtook him on lap 16. Race was over.

A race with a lot of drama. Michael qualified 2nd behind Montoya. At the start, Montoya led from Schumacher and Raikkonen. Trying to get the position from Montoya during the pit stops, Michael cut fractionally across the end of the white tramlines from the pits. He did hold off Montoya but 10 laps later, Michael was given a drive-through penalty for crossing the line. From then, Schumacher thought it's all over for here. The Championship would have to wait until the next race in Germany. On the second pit stops, Montoya struggled with the balance of his tires and drifted to fourth, leaving Raikkonen and Schumacher in 1st and 2nd positions respectively. Schumacher took it a bit easy and started to push with 10 laps to go. On lap 68 of 72, he was close and at the Adelaide hairpin, Raikkonen turned in very deep, slithering on oil left by the Toyota of McNish. Michael took his chances and along it, took the victory and the Championship.
"Seeing him in trouble helped to warn me. That's why I was able to change my line. The final laps were the worst of my life because I realized the Championship was agian in my pocket. I had a weight on my shoulders and felt enormous pressure to make a mistake. As I took the flag, I felt an outburst of emotion and realized how much it means and how I love the sport."
Michael equalled Fangio's 5 World Drivers Championship.

Finally winning his home grand prix in a Ferrari, Michael dominated the whole weekend being the fastest on Friday and Saturday free sessions, getting pole during qualifying and winning the race 10.5 seconds ahead of Montoya.

First win for 2003 but an emotionally difficult race for Michael. His mother died hours before the race but Michael and Ralf still decided that they have to do their jobs and go to the race. Michael beat Raikkonen by 1.8 seconds.

Even a cockpit fire can't stop Michael from winning the race. "I could see the fire. Maybe the mechanics thought I was cold and wanted to warm me up! But the team did a good job to control the situation, reacting quickly with the extinguishers."

Qualified 7th, was able to gain some places in the start so that by lap 4, he was 4th. However, rain fell which initially
favored the cars with Michelin so that by lap 9, he fell back to 6th place, more than 11 seconds behind Raikkonen.
But once Schumacher put on the Bridgestone intermediates, he started to gain places and eventually lead the race. Michael
didn't let go of the lead and now led the Championship by 9 points.
