Schumacher took the pole from Hakkinen by 0.009 of a second. During the start, Michael lost the lead to Mika after a fantastic start from the Finn. Michael followed him all through out the race, the gap between them steady at 2.5 seconds. On lap 30, it started to drizzle and on lap 37, Hakkinen stopped for his 2nd and final pitstop, stationary for 7.4 seconds. Michael had 2 laps to gain enough time to pit and hold the lead. There was rain and traffic, and on his in-lap, Wurz spun in front of Michael at the entrance to the pits. Luckily, there was just enough room to get through. "It was moving backwards infront of me and I didn't know where he was going to go. Schumacher pitted and was stationary for 6.0 seconds. As Michael travelled agonisingly slow down the pitlane, Brawn watched for Hakkinen to come from the chicane and seize the lead. "It's looking good...it's looking good...it's looking bloody good!" Brawn said on the radio. After 21 years, Italy had their World Champion at last.

Took the pole and led every lap except for the pit stops. Victory was marred by the death of a marshall after being hit by a wheel from the crash of Villenueve's car.

Led the race until lap 3, when rain fell and both Ferraris, who were running 1st and 2nd, skated off the track. They rejoined at 6th and 7th places, Michael in 7th. With the safety car out, the Ferraris pitted for intermediate Bridgestone tires, Barrichello pitting first and Schumacher waited behind him. The track had different conditions now, dry on one side, monsoon on the other. Barrichello and Schumacher rejoined at 10th and 11th, respectively. On the restart at lap 11, both Ferraris sliced through the field one by one. By lap 13, Michael was 3rd, 6.27 seconds behind Coulthard. He soon caught up with Coulthard and claimed his 6th successive Grand Prix victory since Monza 2000.

Claimed his 43rd career pole position, making 3 qualifying runs, each of them would have been ample for pole. His third run was mesmerizing to watch, having the elegance of a ballroom quickstep, each precise movement flowing into the next. It lasted 1m 32.48, Montoya next, 1m 33.18.
The race was dominated by Schumacher, who had rapid early laps to ensure victory.
